Roughly fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Officers state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then located many other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.

Local authorities said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.

A high-ranking political figure stated the attack made him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
