No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
